The focus on love is strategic. It is underpinned by the National Framework for Action on Dementia and the Guide to Creating a Dementia-Friendly Community developed by Alzheimer’s Australia. These documents outline the importance of ensuring that people with dementia are valued and respected. They also highlight the right to dignity, choice and quality of life with meaning and purpose. The Symposium responds to these documents by presenting strategies for service providers and community members to enact these important principles.
The Symposium presents love as a common ground we all share and demonstrates the ways in which focusing on love can help to ensure that people with dementia are valued and respected. Love is a powerful emotion in our lives – everyone experiences it, it gives life and makes us human. Exploring the concept of love is a powerful way of empowering service providers and community members to look beyond the disease of dementia - to recognise personhood.
